Relay For Life Team Captain Responsibilities

Job Description

A Team Captain leads a team of 8 to 15 people from your organization to participate in Relay For Life, and raise funds to fight cancer, and increase everyone’s awareness of cancer!

Job Responsibilities

To Get Started

  • Call your local office and learn more about Relay by talking to a staff member who works on the Relay you are interested in. Ideally, they should also put your in contact with the person who is in charge of recruiting teams.
  • The team recruitment person or ACS staff person should give you a team captain’s packet as soon as they are available.

Before the Event

  • Recruit a team of 10-15 members.
  • Attend the American Cancer Society Relay For Life kickoff.
  • Set a fundraising goal, goal for # of survivors, and # of luminaria, for your team.
  • Distribute participant envelopes and other American Cancer Society fundraising tools to all team members.
  • Get all your team members together at least once, and talk about (at a minimum) the following:
  • What Relay is
  • What Relay will be like – go thru the fact that it is overnight, that it starts at about 6pm and goes till the next morning, that people should bring tents, chairs, etc…
  • Give them some ideas on how to fundraise
  • Coach and motivate your team to success. This includes using all available forms of internal communications to generate enthusiasm and participation for the event (i.e., email, voice mail, newsletters).
  • Hold fundraisers to help your team raise money.
  • Attend American Cancer Society planned Team Captain meetings and all internal Team Captain meetings held by your Team Coordinator.
  • Recognize team members for their commitment to the fight against cancer.

The month before and day of the event

  • Make sure that your team brings all the essentials!
  • Organize your team to have a “Team Theme” and set up your campsite to be the best at your event!

After the Event

  • Recognize team members for their commitment to the fight against cancer.
  • Have a prize or maybe a traveling trophy for the highest fundraiser on your team
  • Have your team over for a post-Relay BBQ to recognize them.
  • Attend the event wrap-up so you can give the committee lots of good constructive feedback!
